چکیده

It is increasingly apparent that the future of the Amazon rainforest is under threat from both climate change and agricultural practices. Here we use a 13-year time series of (A)ATSR derived aerosol optical depth (AOD) measurements to examine the role of aerosols in the interaction between deforestation, biomass burning and drought over the Amazon. The seasonal cycle of AOD shows peaks in September and March correlated with local and more remote biomass burning, respectively. A decreasing trend in dry-season AOD between 1995 and 2000 and a subsequent increase from 2000 to 2004 can be explained by deforestation practices driven by economic forces. Throughout the time series dry-season AODs are inversely correlated with dry-season precipitation suggesting a positive feedback between aerosols and drought that may contribute to enhanced drought under climate change.

Impact of biomass burning on cloud properties in the Amazon Basin

We used a 1-D cloud parcel model to assess the impact of biomassburning aerosol on cloud properties in the Amazon Basin and to identify the physical and chemical properties of the aerosol that influence droplet growth. Cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) measurements were performed between 0.15 and 1.5% supersaturation at ground-based sites in the states of Amazonas and Rondônia, Brazil, during sev...

Atmospheric aerosols in Amazonia and land use change: from natural biogenic to biomass burning conditions.

In the wet season, a large portion of the Amazon region constitutes one of the most pristine continental areas, with very low concentrations of atmospheric trace gases and aerosol particles. However, land use change modifies the biosphere-atmosphere interactions in such a way that key processes that maintain the functioning of Amazonia are substantially altered. This study presents a comparison...

Sources of carbonaceous aerosol in the Amazon basin

The quantification of sources of carbonaceous aerosol is important to understand their atmospheric concentrations and regulating processes and to study possible effects on climate and air quality, in addition to develop mitigation strategies. In the framework of the European Integrated Project on Aerosol Cloud Climate Interactions (EUCAARI) fine (Dp < 2.5 μm) and coarse (2.5 μm < Dp < 10 μm) ae...

Physical properties and concentration of aerosol particles over the Amazon tropical forest during background and biomass burning conditions

We investigated the size distribution, scattering and absorption properties of Amazonian aerosols and the optical thickness of the aerosol layer under the pristine background conditions typical of the wet season, as well as during the biomass-burning-influenced dry season. The measurements were made during two campaigns in 1999 as part of the European contribution to the Large-Scale BiosphereAt...

Enhanced Methane Emissions during Amazonian Drought by Biomass Burning

The Amazon is a significant source of atmospheric methane, but little is known about the source response to increasing drought severity and frequency. We investigated satellite observations of atmospheric column-averaged methane for the 2010 drought and subsequent 2011 wet year in the Amazon using an atmospheric inversion scheme. Our analysis indicates an increase in atmospheric methane over th...
